William Bruce was born in 1861 in Auburn, New York and lived there all of his life with the exception of periods spent studying art in New York City and Europe. His early career is marked by exceptional portraits but in later years, he devoted a great deal of time to painting animals. He did especially fine work in his paintings of dogs. Other works were known to be used by calendar firms that distributed all over the world. His paintings have sold for up to $17,000 at auction.
